Social Security Fairness Act Signed into Law

On January 5, 2025, President Joe Biden signed the Social Security Fairness Act into law.

The Social Security Fairness Act repeals the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO), which affected more than 3 million public workers. These provisions had been in effect since 1983.

We will provide more details on our website as they become available.

Again, SERS thanks all of the members and retirees who contacted their federal legislators over the years to repeal or advocate for a fairer formula. This will make a significant difference in the lives of Ohio’s public employees who worked in Social Security jobs or whose spouses earned Social Security benefits.
