WEP and GPO Repealed!
On December 21, 2024, the U.S. Senate passed H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act, to repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) by a margin of 76-20. The House previously passed the bill by a 327-75 vote on November 12.
All of Ohio’s Federal legislators (House and Senate) voted for the bill, except Vice-President elect, Sen. JD Vance who did not vote.
The president must sign the bill into law before implementation can begin. We assume that the Social Security Administration and other federal agencies will be in charge of implementing the changes, but there is currently no timetable on when these efforts will begin.
SERS will keep members and retirees informed of any new implementation developments through its website.
The WEP/GPO provisions had been in effect since 1983.
SERS thanks all of the members and retirees who contacted their federal legislators over the years to repeal or advocate for a fairer formula. This will make a significant difference in the lives of Ohio’s public employees who worked in Social Security jobs or whose spouses earned Social Security benefits.
